Protect Your Eyes from UV Rays This Summer

Summer is a time for fun in the sun, but it’s also when we need to be extra careful about our eye health. According to the Royal National Institute for Blind People (RNIB), one in three people in the UK will experience some form of eye problem by the time they’re 80 years old.

Studies have shown that repeated exposure to UV radiation can damage the central part of the retina and contribute to the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD affects over 600,000 people in the UK and is the leading cause of sight loss in the UK.

There are things we can do to protect our eyesight, and in this blog post, we’ll explore ways to keep our eyes safe this summer. With these helpful eye care tips, you can keep your eyes and vision intact and enjoy summer even more:

Wear sunglasses

Good sunglasses shield your eyes against the sun and UV rays. Don’t forget your UV-coated glasses when going to the beach or taking a walk outside. This is an essential tip. UV rays can reach your eyes in any season.

The Hat Looks Good On You

It looks good, but it also serves a huge role in protecting your eyes. A sunglass and a hat are perfect for protecting your eyes against the harsh sun and UV rays. A wide-brimmed hat with a minimum of 3 inches works best.

Contacts Work Fine

Not those made for fashion’s sake, there are contact lenses that add protection to your eyes or better your vision, and these are the type of contacts that are worth your precious eyes. If you wear contact lenses, get a pair that offers UV protection. They work best in shielding your eyes during summer.

Do you Swim?

I guess summer is the best time to do it. Don’t wear contact lenses when swimming. They can grip bacteria in a pool, lake, or ocean; the bacteria would settle on your eyes and can further lead to severe infections. Sometimes, it could be the chlorine in the pool that may cause eye irritation. There are swimming goggles for kids and adults that give the eyes 100% protection against all effects of swimming to the eyes. Get yourself a pair.

Eat Healthy and Stay Hydrated

Eating a healthy diet containing good vitamins for the eyes should also be a habit every season. In summer, eating healthy fruits and green veggies is essential. You should also add foods containing omega-3 fatty acids like fish to your meal.

Furthermore, drinking a sustaining amount of water in summer is vital. Staying hydrated during summer can save you a lot of eye strain, headache and blurry vision caused by summer.

Seek shade

When outdoors, try to stay in the shade as much as possible. This will help reduce your exposure to the sun’s harmful rays.

Maintain A Clean Pair Of Hands

Many places you touch, whether at home or work, may contain germs that could stick to your hands, and rubbing your eyes with dirty hands is the easiest way to transfer germs to your eyes. So, please wash your hands before getting them close to your eyes.

Wear Protective Glasses For Other Activities

There are protective goggles for almost every activity that you do. Whether sports, woodwork or other activities like welding, ensure you wear the appropriate eyewear for every activity.

Eye drops

Use eye drops or artificial tears if your eyes feel dry or irritated.

Regular Eye Exam Is Vital

Regular eye exams should not be ignored. So keep up with your regular eye checkup this summer and every other season; your eyes would appreciate that.
